Global Ban for TBT Anti-fouling

From September 2008, a global ban on the use of organotin-based antifouling paints will come into force.

In 2001, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) agreed the convention on harmful anti-foul systems.  For the convention to come into force, 25 countries representing 25% of the world’s shipping tonnage had to sign up.  Panama’s ratification in mid September tipped this threshold bringing the convention into play next year.  Panama was forced to comply due to a 2003 EU ruling banning ships with organotin-based paints from EU ports in January 2008.

TBT as an anti-fouling paint on recreational craft has been banned for 20 years.
